Introduction
This Trustee Handbook sets out the responsibilities, duties, and expectations of trustees for the Yoruba Heritage Art and Cultural Group – Midlands UK, a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO).
Our Purpose
The Yoruba Heritage Art and Cultural Group – Midlands UK aims to promote and preserve the rich cultural traditions, arts, and values of the Yoruba people through education, exhibitions, and public events.

Role of Trustees
Trustees are legally responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity. They must act in the charity's best interests, ensure proper management of resources, and promote its objects.
Key duties include:
Ensuring the charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit
Managing the charity’s resources responsibly
Complying with the charity’s governing document and the law
Acting with reasonable care
and skill
Acting in the charity’s best

Specific Responsibilities
Attend and contribute to trustee meetings
Review and approve strategic plans and budgets
Support fundraising, events, and community outreach
Act as an ambassador for the organisation

Working with
Kabiyesi
Kabiyesi is the cultural head of the organisation. Trustees work closely with Kabiyesi on all decisions relating to Yoruba cultural representation. Kabiyesi ensures authenticity, cultural integrity, and endorsement of all public and traditional activities.

Conflict of Interest Policy
Trustees must declare any conflict of interest and remove themselves from decisions where a conflict exists. All conflicts must be recorded and managed according to charity regulations.

Conduct
Trustees are expected to act with integrity, maintain confidentiality, avoid conflicts of interest, and represent the charity professionally at all times.

Safeguarding and Compliance
Trustees have a duty to ensure the organisation complies with all safeguarding, health and safety, and data protection regulations.

Trustee Meetings and Communication
Regular meetings are held to review progress, discuss challenges, and plan activities. Minutes are taken, and decisions are recorded. Trustees are encouraged to maintain open, respectful communication.
